What's the point in having a team called 'Great Britain' if 11
Englishmen play in it? :)

Subject: Real Madrid announces roster

Real Madrid have announced their lineup as they prepare to meet Club
Deportivo Guadalajara this Saturday, July 16, in Chicago.

The Spanish superclub begins their World Tour, which consists of only
the U.S. and East Asia, this weekend in the Windy City. The match
will be the second of a double header, starting with the Chicago Fire
hosting the Columbus Crew in an MLS showdown.

Real will have almost their full, star-studded roster, except for
defenders Jonathan Woodgate and Walter Samuel. David Beckham, perhaps
the most recognizable soccer name in America, will make his second
appearance in the States after playing in an England friendly at the
Meadowlands earlier this summer. Portugal midfielder Luis Figo has
been included on the roster, even though rumors persist about a
forthcoming move to Liverpool.

Real Madrid will travel to Los Angeles after facing the Mexican
powerhouse to take on the Galaxy of MLS. Their tour will finish with
stops in China, Japan, and Thailand.

REAL MADRID WORLD TOUR 2005 ROSTER
GOALKEEPERS: Iker Casillas, Diego López, Carlos Sánchez.
DEFENDERS: Michel Salgado, Alvaro Mejía, Ivan Helguera, Carlos Pavón,
Carlos Diogo, Roberto Carlos, Raúl Bravo, Ruben De la Red.
MIDFIELDERS: Pablo García, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Jose Maria
Gutierrez ("Guti"), Luis Figo, Thomas Gravesen, Jose Manuel Jurado,
Alvaro Arbeloa.
FORWARDS: Raúl, Ronaldo, Michael Owen, Juanfran, Roberto Soldado.
Head Coach: Vanderlei Luxemburgo

Subject: Spurs agree to sell Atouba

Tottenham have agreed to sell Cameroon international Thimothee Atouba
after just one season at White Hart Lane.

Spurs have accepted a bid, believed to be in the region of £2m, from
German club Hamburg.

Atouba, who joined from Swiss club Basle last summer, has travelled to
Germany to discuss personal terms, but has already expressed a desire
to make the move.

"We have agreed a deal with Hamburg for the transfer of Thimothee
Atouba, subject to the player finalising personal terms," confirmed
Spurs.

I suppose Spurs had to diminish their squad from 57 to 56 players :)

Subject: Protesting United fans urge CL boycott

Fans are being urged to boycott Manchester United's Champions League
qualifying tie in an attempt to help force out the club's new owner,
Malcolm Glazer.

United are due to play in the third round next month and will be
looking to secure their place in the Champions League group stage.

However, the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association do
not want fans to turn up and watch.

"This boycott is the chance for them to show Glazer they do not want
him or his debts," said IMUSA spokesman Mark Longden.

"It's simple - do not buy a ticket for this match. This is our chance
to demonstrate to Glazer that supporters do have a voice and are
prepared to use it," explained Longden.

"He will keep targeting us to pay off his debts if he thinks we are
weak and willing. We are neither.

"We react with horror at his plans for ticket prices, as more and
more decent, loyal, United fans will be priced out of going to the
club they love and support.

"We will not allow that to happen."

United won't know until the draw on 29 July who they must play, and
whether they will be at home on either 10 or 24 August.

Subject: Tottenham in for Guti

Tottenham are keen to sign Real Madrid's Spanish international
midfielder Guti.

Chairman Daniel Levy is willing to splash out £5 million for the
player, who has become frustrated with his lack of first-team football
at the Bernabeu.

The likes of Arsenal, Juventus, Liverpool and Everton have also been
linked.

It is not known what sort of money Real would be looking for to part
ways with Guti.

*****************************

I wonder if they can afford him.

Well, FIFA allows every country in GB to have it's own team and the
IOC only allows GB.

Subject: Strongest Leagues in the World (IFFHS)

The German Bundesliga on the turning point !

Each year, at the beginning of July, there is an opportunity to
analyse national and international results to detect new trends in
the strength of various national leagues. The latest trends are as
following:

1st. The Italian Serie A, which in the nineties was almost
permanently No.1 in the world, is on the way to regaining its old
position and will compete in 2005 with the English Premier League
for the title of the strongest League of the World.

2nd. The Spanish Primera División suffered from the disastrous
results of its top clubs (Real Madrid, "Barça", Valencia, La Coruña)
in the "Copa de España" and in the international competitions –
dropping back to 3rd place. A successful defence of the title does
not look likely.

3rd. While the top leagues from Argentina and Brazil as well as
those from Italy, England, Spain and France will remain in the "Top
7" of the world, the trend will mean that the German Bundesliga will
no longer feature in the "Top 7" before long. In future the German
Bundesliga will be far better marketed through the German media than
for some time.

4th. The Mexican clubs have again confirmed through the "Copa
Libertadores" that its Primera División, is the third strongest in
Latin-America together with that from Colombia.

5th. The improvement of the Middle East leagues (UAE, Saudi Arabia,
Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain) has been impressive. It should be noted that
in these countries the national competitions will played above all
in the first half of the calendar year and they will not be able to
retain their current very good positions globally. For the
Scandinavian countries, USA and some others it is reversed because
there the main emphasis of the competitions is in the second half of
the calendar year.

6th. The national leagues of Russia, Morocco, Nigeria, Republic of
Korea, Ghana, Estonia, Egypt, China, Ivory Coast, Iran, Algeria,
Zimbabwe and Angola all showed impressive improvement, while the
leagues from Peru, Ecuador, Czech Republic, Bolivia, Poland,
Bulgaria, Israel, Serbia & Montenegro, Senegal, Romania, Venezuela,
Hungary, Denmark and Uzbekistan fell back.

The following are the "Top 80":
points
1. Italia 594,0 41. Algérie 182,0
2. England 587,0 42. Zimbabwe 177,0
3. España 482,0 43. Cameroun 174,0
4. Argentina 478,0 44. Azerbaijan 171,0
5. France 472,0 45. Jordan 168,0

7. Nederland 449,5 Macedonia 167,0
8. México 446,0 48. Bolivia 164,0
9. Colombia 391,5 Polska 164,0
10. Deutschland 382,0 50. Armenia 162,0
11. Portugal 373,0 51. Albania 161,0

24. Nigeria 236,0 Zambia 138,0
25. Qatar 235,5 65. Schweiz 137,0
26. Ukraina 231,5 Slovensko 137,0
27. Kuwait 227,0 67. Japan 134,0
28. Österreich 218,0 68. Costa Rica 132,0
29. Korea (S) 217,0 69. Guatemala 131,0
30. Perú 211,5 Panamá 131,0
31. Bahrain 211,0 71. Jamaica 123,5
Ghana 211,0 Syria 123,5
33. Ecuador 205,0 73. El Salvador 119,0
Eesti 205,0 Thailand 119,0
35. Egypt 203,5 75. Honduras 118,0
36. China 196,0 76. Hrvatska 117,0
37. Côted'Ivoire 195,0 77. USA 115,0
38. Tunisie 194,0 78. Lietuva 114,0
39. Ceská Repub. 189,0 79. Slovenija 111,0
40. Iran 188,0 80. Belarus 110,0

------------------------------------------------

This ranking changes a lot every year because it does not take into
acocunt moving averages, which makes it too volatile. I do agree in
the top three, not necessarily in that order, but those are the top
three leagues.
Argentina, Brazil and Mexico are the top three leagues in America.
Today Brazil is above Argentina tho.
