Subject: Cech earns Czech acclaim

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is the Czech Republic's player of the
season after winning the Golden Ball.

Plenty of prizes
The 23-year-old beat Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedved, a four-time

for the second time while Mladá Boleslav striker Roman Bednáø
collected the discovery of the year gong.

Successful season
Cech's success caps a tremendous first season in London, where
Chelsea raced to the English Premiership title, conceding just 15
league goals, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. He
earned 73 of the 103 votes cast, with Liverpool forward Milan Baroš
finishing third behind Nedved.

International class
The goalkeeper is firmly established as his country's No1 and is
playing a major role in their bid to reach the 2006 World Cup finals.

Subject: Broos back for Genk challenge

Former Club Brugge and Anderlecht coach Hugo Broos has taken charge of
KRC Genk ahead of their 2005/06 UEFA Cup campaign.

Vandereycken departure
Broos has signed a two-year contract, with a 12-month extension option,
and succeeds René Vandereycken who was fired two weeks ago despite Genk
securing European football by beating Standard de Liège in a play-off.
The teams had finished level on points in joint-third place in the
Belgian First Division.

Coaching success
Broos himself was sacked by Anderlecht in February, to be replaced by
Franky Vercauteren, as the Brussels club trailed Club Brugge in the
title race. He had won the championship with Anderlecht in 2003/04, to
add to the two league titles and two Belgian Cups he collected as
Brugge boss from 1991-97. The 53-year-old was also a player with
Belgium's leading two clubs as well as a Belgian international defender.

*********************************

A good choice even if I think they shouldn't have sacked Vandereycken.

Subject: Austria challenge attracts Ceh

Slovenia captain Nastja Ceh has agreed a switch from Belgian champions
Club Brugge to Austria Wien.

Right time
Midfielder Ceh will sign a three-year deal with the Austrian Cup
winners who will compete in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, although the transfer
fee has not been disclosed. "We let him go now and get some money, or
he goes for free next season," said Brugge sporting director Marc
Degryse.

International class
The 27-year-old made 101 league appearances for Brugge over the last
four seasons, scoring 24 goals, having arrived from NK Maribor in his
homeland. Ceh has been capped 32 times by his country and played at the
2002 World Cup finals in Korea/Japan.

*****************************

That's sad as he was a real important player on our midfield :(
At least Blondel will be able to play a lot more now..

Subject: Matthaus heading for Hearts?

The former World Cup winning captain of Germany, Lothar Matthaus, has
thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant managerial post at SPL
club Heart of Midlothian.

Matthaus, 44, who won 150 caps for his country, is currently national
team coach for Hungary, but contacted Edinburgh-based Hearts to
become a late contender for their job.

A Hearts spokesman said: "Lothar has expressed an interest in
becoming our manager and he will be considered along with the other
candidates."

Matthaus has also coached Rapid Vienna - but only for 245 days - and
Partizan Belgrade, whom he led to the Serbian title in 2003 and into
the Champions League before leaving them at the end of that year to
take up his current position. Hungary are third in World Cup
qualifying Group Eight with 10 points from six games, six points
behind leaders Croatia.

"The Hearts job is one of the best in Scottish football and it is an
intriguing prospect," he told Scottish newspaper The Daily Record.

"I saw them play Ferencvaros in the Uefa Cup last season and they
played with a lot of heart.

"I have not spoken to Hearts about the coaching job but it is an
interesting proposition."

Former Aberdeen and St Johnstone defender John Inglis, who is one of
Matthaus' representatives, told the Scotsman newspaper: "Lothar is
missing the day-to-day involvement of club football.

"If Hearts or any other club wanted him, they would have to prove
they are ambitious."

******************************

That would be fun...
Can he do as good as Vogts for Scotland? :p

Subject: Best arrested for alleged assault

Legendary footballer George Best has been arrested and bailed on
suspicion of indecently assaulting a young girl.

The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland winger, now 59, is
alleged to have attacked the girl, who is aged under 13, last month
at Ewell in Surrey.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said: "We have received an allegation
of indecent assault against a 59-year-old man who was arrested on 9
June."

Best was also held on the same date following an allegation that he
assaulted a woman.

The police spokeswoman added that the force was not prepared to
discuss any further details of the investigation.

Best was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily
harm against a 34-year-old woman.

It has now emerged he was also questioned about the indecent assault
claim.

Speaking on 9 June, Best's agent Phil Hughes said he "categorically"
denied attacking the woman.

Best was questioned for nine hours at Staines police station before
being freed on police bail.

He is due to return to a police station in Surrey for further
questioning on 6 July.

Nothing new here :)
