An artistic expression was in evidence in Brussels last weekend as
exiled supporters of Spanish side Real Sporting de Gijón found a novel –
if slightly childish – way of celebrating the club's centenary.

The renegade supporters mounted an assault on the city's famous
Manneken-Pis fountain, dressing the famous urinating statue in a
bullfighter's cape and filling the fountain below with Asturia's famous
natural cider.

Thus they toasted their side's anniversary with a cup of what some
would regard as a small boy's wee.

Cheers :)

Reports have been circulating that the European Champion Clubs' Cup
trophy that Liverpool were given 'for keeps' after their recent final
win was damaged in the course of their celebrations.

The trophy shared a bed with captain Steven Gerrard on the night of the
final, but it was not the English international's embrace that dented
the cup.

Rather, Czech colleague Milan Baroš dropped it on a grand piano,
damaging one of the handles. Anfield museum curator Steve Done
said: "We decided not to get it repaired because it is part of the
character of the cup."

****************************

Just win a new one :)

Subject: Neftchi crowned in Azerbaijan

PFC Neftchi won the Azerbaijani First Division title for the second
season running, defeating Khazar Lenkoran 2-1 in a championship play-
off.

Come from behind win
Neftchi, who finished level on points and victories with Lenkoran at
the top of the table, came from behind to win with second-half goals
from Ruslan Abbasob and Zaur Tagizade.

On the rebound
Alim Gurbanov put Lenkoran ahead in an opening period in which the
eventual runners-up held the upper hand, scoring from a rebound after
Neftchi goalkeeper Jahangir Hasanzade had saved from Rashad
Abdullayev.

Deciding moments
Khazar took control after the interval, however, and equalised on the
hour when Abbasob followed up to score following a deflected Rashad
Sadygov free-kick. Then, in the 73rd minute, Tagizade dispossessed a
defender to break clear into the penalty area and hit the winner.

Coach's confidence
With Neftchi champions for the fourth time, coach Agasalim
Mirdzhavadov said: "I believed this was our destiny. Today everyone
had proof that Neftchi are the strongest team in Azerbaijan." His
side will now enter the Champions League first qualifying round.

3.Xazar-2 Lankaran.... 14 07 3 4 25-18 24

*******************************

I am not sure that Neftchi can really call themselves the best team
over the whole season. Just look at the goal average!

Seems like the league will be reduced to 16 teams. I suppose it's
good that 4 teams from Baki got relegated. Too many teams in that
city :)

Subject: Anderlecht swoop for Serhat

Belgian Champions League contenders RSC Anderlecht have signed
Turkish international striker Serhat Akin, who arrives on a free
transfer from Turkish champions Fenerbahçe SK.

Five years of success
The 24-year-old, who signed a three-year contract with the Brussels
club on Friday afternoon, was born in Germany and spent his formative
years with Karlsruher before joining Fenerbahçe in 2000. In five
seasons with the Istanbul side, Serhat scored 41 goals in 125 league
games and helped Fenerbahçe to three Superleague titles.

European hopes
"I have had a very good career at Fenerbahçe, but Anderlecht is a
step closer to western Europe, and that is why I chose to come here,"
said Serhat, who made his international debut in 2002 and has
subsequently scored three times in eleven appearances for his country.

**************************

I don't know him that well, but they say that he is a great Turkish
talent. We'll see, hopefully he scores a lot of goals in Europe but
not in the national league :p

Subject: Kluivert fails Valencia medical

The transfer from Newcastle to Valencia is now in doubt.

Patrick Kluivert's much acclaimed move from the English Premiership
back to the Spanish Liga may be undermined by the failed first medical
exam the player underwent before joining Valencia.

Now the Dutch forward will undergo a second medical exam and if the
results are negative the transfer will not go through.

Apparently the cause of the failed exam was due to some problems with
Kluivert's knee.

*****************************

Is there something Kluivert doesn't fail in these days? :)

Subject: United fans fury at price hike claims

Manchester United fans have expressed their anger at newspaper claims
that Malcolm Glazer plans to increase United's ticket prices by 50%
over the next five years.

It is also reported that Sir Alex Ferguson, or whoever is in charge,
will receive a maximum of £25m to spend on transfers each season.

"How is he going to fill an expanded stadium when fans are leaving in
droves?" Shareholders United chairman Nick Towle told BBC Radio Five
Live.

"They are so disillusioned with the massive increases it will just
turn more and more fans off."

However, a spokesman for Glazer's family company denied plans had
been finalised.

50%?? Ouch!!
The most hated man in Manchester :p

Football's governing body FIFA sentenced that Roma have to dish out 8
million Euros to Auxerre for the Philippe Mexes transfer coup, on
Monday.

Roma were hoping to pay a maximum of 5 million Euros, while Auxerre,
the club Roma `snatched' Mexes away from last August, wanted 18.

Roma are expected to appeal the decision to TAS, who however sided with
the French club earlier this season on the six week ban from official
competitions FIFA decided to punish the player with.

*************************

Mexes turned out to be a very expensive player as he is also the one
who started the riots against Kiev in the CL :p

Subject: Kompany staying put

The Belgian defender will not leave Anderlecht this summer despite
attracting the interest of many important European teams.

Vincent Kompany is set to remain for another season in Belgium as his
agent, Luca Pelizzon, confirmed that the 19 year-old will not leave
Anderlecht this summer.

"He renewed his contract up till 2009 and will remain at Anderlecht at
100%. The player and the club have agreed on continuing together at
least until June of next year."

Many clubs are after the services of the young talent, including Milan,
Inter, Manchester United and Barcelona.

************************

It's probably a wise decision.
It's gone be a very important season in Belgium as the next champion
will get a direct CL group's ticket for the first time (no qualifying
rounds).
