Subject: Re: Libertadores Quarterfinals!

5 players were called but in the end two were allowed to play. For
the return match there are still negotiations going on with the
National coach, so we do not know if we will have at least some of
those players available.

River and Boca are not having a good season indeed. Bad coaching and
some generational change might be the answer.

Subject: Jol reassures Spurs fans

Tottenham Hotspur's head coach Martin Jol has told the club's fans
that there is plenty to look forward to next season, despite the
suspension and likely departure of sporting director Frank Arnesen.
It was Arnesen who brought Jol to White Hart Lane, but the Dane was
suspended at the weekend after he apparently indicated his wish to
join Chelsea following an alleged illegal approach for his services
from the Blues.

However, Jol told Spurs' website: "The news about Frank is a big
disappointment.

"But I want to reassure fans there is a lot to anticipate and we
already have our plans in place for the season.

"We finished last season on an optimistic note and I am determined
that we stay that way.

"The teamwork here is such a big feature at Spurs and that impressed
me from day one.

"We move on and I'm really looking forward to seeing the fans all
again at the Lane at the start of the new season."

Jol was made head coach at Spurs following the resignation of former
France coach Jacques Santini in November, and has a contract at White
Hart Lane until the summer of 2007.

Jol was also philosophical about Tottenham's missing out on a
European place via Uefa's Fair Play draw. The draw took place in
Manchester on Sunday, with Spurs in competition with clubs from
Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Estonia and Germany.

Two places in next season's Uefa Cup were available, and a Danish
club - as yet unknown as their season has not finished - and German
side Mainz were the lucky ones.

Jol said he was disappointed, but was looking on the bright side.

"It makes us all determined to secure European football for our club
and supporters through strong performances next season," he told
Spurs' website.

"We just missed out. To take a positive it will give myself and the
players time to prepare for next season.

"We hope that will be where we make the next step in our development."

Spurs finished second to Arsenal in the Football Association's
domestic fair play rankings - but the Gunners' Champions League
qualification ruled them out of contention.

Sweden's Hammarby, Tulevik Viljandi of Estonia and Young Boys of
Switzerland were the other clubs to miss out on a place.

Sack Arnesen :)

Subject: European World Cup 2006 Qualifying

Saturday's European World Cup qualifiers produced high-scoring
victories for the Czech Republic and Sweden, and important wins – or
draws – for a number of other teams striving to reach next summer's
finals in Germany.

Group One
Holland (19 points) remain a point clear of the Czech Republic at the
top of the Group after both countries recorded comfortable victories.
The Dutch beat Romania 2-0 thanks to goals from Arjen Robben and Dirk
Kuijt in a result that leaves the Romanians third on 13 points having
played a game more than the two leaders.
The Czech Republic achieved their sixth win in seven World Cup
qualifiers by hammering the Group's whipping-boys, Andorra, 8-1 at
the U Nisy Stadium. Four Czech goals came in the last 10 minutes, by
which time Andorra had been reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of
Justo Ruiz, but it was nevertheless an impressive performance by the
home side, whose only defeat so far in qualifying came against
Holland in Amsterdam. Vratislav Lokvenc and Jan Koller (his 35th
international goal, making him the Czech Republic's all-time top
scorer) put them two-up inside half-an-hour, but Andorra responded
with a rare goal, netted by Gabi Riera, in virtually their only
attack of the game. Vladimir Smicer, a Tomas Galasek penalty, Milan
Baros, Tomas Rosicky (penalty), Jan Polak and Lokvenc again then took
the Czechs' tally to 22 goals in seven qualifying games.
Elsewhere in the Group, Henk Wisman's first match in charge of
Armenia ended in defeat as FYR Macedonia won 2-1 in Yerevan. Goran
Pandev scored in each half for the visitors, while Edgar Manucharyan
netted for Armenia. Macedonia now have 8 points from as many games,
Armenia 4.

Group Two
Ukraine consolidated their place at the top of Group Two with a 2-0
home win over Kazakhstan. An 18th minute strike by Andriy Shevchenko
and an own goal by Igor Avdeyev kept Ukraine's unbeaten record intact
and means they have 20 points from 8 games. They are five ahead of
Greece, whom they visit on Wednesday. The Greeks earned a hard-fought
point in Istanbul in a goalless draw with Turkey. The result means
Otto Rehhagel's Euro 2004 winners stay second, with 15 points – two
more than Turkey.
Meanwhile, Albania beat Georgia 3-2, though at one point they were
cruising, having gone three-up after 55 minutes through Igli Tare (2)
and Ervin Skela. Georgia hit back with two goals in the last five
minutes, scored by Lado Burduli and Levan Kobiashvili, in an empty
stadium in Tirana. FIFA had imposed a one match spectator ban on the
Albanians after previous incidents of crowd trouble. Albania moved
onto nine points but the defeat was Georgia's fourth in the Group and
leaves them marooned just above Kazakhstan.

Group Three
Portugal opened up a three-point lead at the top of Group Three with
a 2-0 victory over Slovakia in a top-of-the-table clash in Lisbon.
Both sides went into the game on 14 points but, in Luis Figo's
international comeback appearance, Fernando Meira gave Luiz Felipe
Scolari's team a 21st minute lead and Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the
advantage three minutes before half-time. Portugal are still unbeaten
in the Group, but it was Slovakia's first defeat of the campaign.
Andrei Arshavin and Dmitri Loskov (a penalty) scored second-half
goals to boost Russia's chances of qualifying with a 2-0 win over
Latvia at Zenit St Petersburg's Petrovski Stadium. The result puts
the Russians firmly back in contention with 14 points from 7 games –
the same as Slovakia.
Estonia beat Liechtenstein 2-0 at home with Andrei Stepanov and
Andres Oper scoring.

Group Four
The Republic of Ireland again failed to take the opportunity of
establishing a clear advantage in Group Four. They let slip a two-
goal lead in a bad-tempered affair against Israel in Dublin. The
Irish had conceded a last-minute equaliser in Tel Aviv two months ago
when the teams last met. And this time they blew a 2-0 advantage
established after just 11 minutes through an Ian Harte free-kick and
Robbie Keane's 25th goal for his country. Greek referee Kyros
Vassaras and Israeli goalkeeper Dudu Awat were key figures in the
contest, Awat getting Andy O'Brien sent off and Vassaras, who lost
control as the game wore on – ruling out what would have been Keane's
second having earlier denied the striker a clear-cut penalty. The
injured Keane then departed the action, and Israel stunned their
hosts as Avi Yehiel headed home from a free-kick on his debut and Avi
Nimni equalized with a twice-taken penalty just before the break.
With Ireland and Israel both dropping points and France not playing,
Switzerland moved to the top of the Group by beating the Faroe
Islands to extend their unbeaten start to the qualifying campaign.
Alexander Frei netted a late pair after Raphael Wicky had opened the
scoring 25 minutes after the start and Rogvi Jacobsen had equalized
20 minutes before the end. The win puts Jakob Kuhn's men top with 12
points from six games. Israel are second with 11 from seven while
France and Ireland both have 10 from six.

Group Five
Italy maintained their four-point cushion at the top of Group Five
after holding Norway to a 0-0 draw in Oslo, but they had keeper
Gianluigi Buffon to thank as he kept them in the game with second-
half saves from John Arne Riise and John Carew. Norway are second
with nine points, the same number as Slovenia, who were held to a 1-1
draw by Belarus. Nastja Ceh scored for the visitors before Valentin
Belkevich leveled for Belarus, who take on Scotland in Minsk on
Wednesday.
The Scots earned their first win of the campaign - and first under
new manager Walter Smith - with a 2-0 victory over Moldova. Goals
from Christian Dailly and James McFadden secured the points gave the
Scots three points in a nervy display at Hampden Park. Scotland now
have five points from as many games.

Group Six
Poland moved above non-playing England at the top of Group Six with a
comfortable 3-0 away win over bottom-placed Azerbaijan. Sven-Goran
Eriksson's side are now two points behind the Poles, but have a game
in hand. Thomas Frankowski opened the scoring just before the half-
hour mark, before Tomasz Klos and Maciej Zurawski wrapped up the
points for Poland, who had beaten the Azeris 8-0 in March.

Group Seven
Spain joined Serbia & Montengro at the top of Group Seven with a 1-0
win over Lithuania, to take a big step towards qualifying. Substitute
Alberto Luque scored the only goal with 21 minutes left to play. But
it was Spain's 18th shot of the game, strikers Raul and Fernando
Torres having given their critics ammunition by firing blanks. again
fired blanks to give more ammunition to their critics.
Serbia & Montenegro were held at home by Belgium, missing several
chances as Belgian goalkeeper Silvio Proto producing a string of fine
saves.
Both Serbia & Montenegro and Spain now have 12 points from six games
and are unbeaten with three wins and three draws apiece. Belgium
remain fourth with eight points from six games, one point fewer than
third-placed Lithuania.
Bosnia-Herzegovina secured their second win of the competition away
at San Marino. Hasan Salihamidzic struck twice and Sergei Barbarez
also scored, with Andy Selva replying for San Marino.

Group Eight
Sweden stayed in touch with Group Eight leaders Croatia after
crushing Malta 6-0 in Gothenburg. The Swedes remain just one point
behind Croatia, who won 3-1 win in Bulgaria. Sweden had already
scored seven against Malta in their September meeting. Now Jonson
(6), Svensson (18), Wilhelmsson (30), Ibrahimovic (40), Ljungberg
(57) and Elmander (81) inflicted more misery on the Maltese.
Bulgaria's qualification hopes suffered a possibly terminal blow
after their home defeat by unbeaten Croatia. Coming into the game on
the back of two disappointing results in the March round of
qualification matches, Bulgaria's coach Hristo Stoichkov needed a win
to keep his side's chances alive. But the Croatians dominated at the
hostile Vasil Levski stadium. Babic (18) and Tudor (58) put the
visitors firmly in control, and though Martin Petrov pulled one back
for Bulgaria on 72 minutes, Kranjcar netted a third for Croatia ten
minutes from time to make it 3-1.

Automatically qualified: Germany (hosts)
UEFA has 13 more places; the 8 group winners and 2 best runners-up
qualify automatically while the 6 remaining runners-up play off for
3 more places.

Group 1:
No discussion possible here, Holland and the Czechs will fight among
each other for the direct qualification ticket. Romania is now as
good as out with 5 points behind and a game played more...
A last chance for Finland this wednesday as they play home against
the Dutch and also still have a game in hand. I expect a very
difficult game for the Dutch there to get the three points!
The Czechs and Romania should take the three points at home now
against Macedonia and Armenia.

Group 2:
A last chance for the Greeks this wednesday to close the gap with
Ukraine as they will receive the leaders.
Denmark should beat Albania at home and keep some little hope.
The Turks will have to win in Kazakhstan, but that won't be that easy!

Group 3:
Portugal took a huge step to qualification as they defeated Slovakia.
This result also bring back the Russians for the play off spot.
Portugal and Slovakia will try to take back the three points out of
Estonia and Luxemburg this wednesday.

Group 4:
The most open group of all!!
France 4th tells it all :p
Israel had a great 2-2 draw in Ireland, this also means that in case
they end equal with Ireland in the end, the Israeli will have the
better result between each other. Ireland can only be happy with the
three points now this wednesday in the Faroe Islands.

Group 5:
Italy goes to another qualification without glance...
Everything is still open for the second spot! Norway, Slovenia,
Belarus and Scotland can still all make it.
Question is, can Scotland take the 3 points in Belarus this
wednesday??

Group 6:
Poland just won't give up the race for the automatic qualification :)
Austria seems doomed, unless...

Group 7:
Seems like Serbia and Spain will fight for the first place, but I
still have hope for Belgium as we still have to face Spain in
Brussels and that Serbia still has to play in Lithuania, Spain and
against Bosnia... I can hope :)

Group 8:
Croatia and Sweden are just too good to let this advantage slip!
They can fight this out between each other now.

Peru and Venezuela can not make many more mistakes..
