Thursday, 16 June 2005 13:24:39
MILAN - Inter's 2004/05 season concludes with last night's Coppa
Italia final victory over Roma. After several weeks' holiday the Nerazzurri
are back to work on Sunday 10 July for a pre-retreat training week in
Sardinia which will be reserved exclusively for the players and their
families.

On Thursday 14 July the squad leaves Sardinia for the northern Italian
mountain resort of Riscone di Brunico. The two-week training camp in the
mountains runs from Friday 15 July to Saturday 23 July, with friendly
matches against local teams scheduled for Sunday 17, Wednesday 20 and
Saturday 23 July.

On Sunday 24 the squad flies from Verona to London, England for four
friendly matches against Leicester City (25 July), Crystal Palace (27 July),
Norwich City (29 July) and Portsmouth FC (31 July).

After two days off, the squad returns to Appiano Gentile on Wednesday
3 August to continue summer training. There will be another friendly match
before Inter's first competitive fixture of the 2005/06 season - the UEFA
Champions League third qualifying round first leg match on 9 or 10 August
(draw to take place in Nyon, Switzerland on 29 July).

Inter's pre-season continues at the San Paolo Stadium in Naples with
the Birra Moretti Trophy against Napoli and Juventus, then it's off to
Sweden for a week's training in the Scandiniavian country (until 14 August),
to include a friendly match against a local side.

The Nerazzurri then return to Appiano Gentile to prepare for the
Italian Super Cup against Juventus on 20 August and the Champions League
qualifying round second leg on 23 or 24 August.

There will then be a final week's training in Appiano Gentile before
the 2005/06 Serie A season kicks off on Sunday 28 August (Inter's first
match is at home).

--------------------------------------
MANCINI: "EVEN BETTER TO WIN HERE" [1]
MILAN - Part one of Roberto Mancini's end of season interview with Inter Channel:

The season has finished with the Coppa Italia victory. It has been
written that this is the first success of the Mancini era, which is
certainly an important declaration. What do you think?
"This is what I'm hoping. I hope my experience at Inter lasts as long
as possible and I hope it's full of victories like Wednesday evening's.
Evenings of happiness, the culmination of everyone's work."

Let's analyse this triumph. Someone has said that by winning the Coppa
Italia it's as if a bottle has been opened. What comes out of this bottle?
"It was important for the team to finish off the season with a
victory. And in terms of our game and personality, we have shown a lot since
the beginning of the year, despite the too many draws. Finishing with a win
was important to make the players understand that the recent past could be
changed. It was especially important for those players who have been at
Inter for some time, those who have lost important matches, like for example
the one on 5 May (2002). It's also important to finish with a win because it
sees us start next season with a final straight away - the Super Cup, and
therefore really try to open a new page in Inter's history."

Does Mancini think this victory has cancelled out those negative
experiences that have led to great disappointments?
"When you play football days like 5 May can happen. The important
thing is to forget about them quickly, though I realise that it's not easy.
But in football you need to turn the page, just like in a few days' time we
will also have to forget about the Coppa Italia victory. It's in the past
now and it no longer counts for anything. Inter are a big club and a big
team with millions of fans all over the world. They hadn't managed to win
for years, and needed a moment of happiness which they went close to on a
number of occasions in recent years."

Coming to Inter meant accepting a challenge with an extra motivation:
leading a team to success that hadn't won for a long time. In the end you
won the Coppa Italia. A good start to the challenge.
"It's a great honour to be Inter coach, even if you don't realise this
at the start. Then you stop and reflect for a moment and you realise that
coaching Inter really is completely different. It's a common denominator in
my career, firstly as a player and then as a coach, to win something and
give joy to fans who haven't had any for a while. If in the last ten years a
coach has gone to coach Juventus or Milan, he remains one of many. To coach
a team that hasn't won for a while and get it back to winning ways is an
extra satisfaction."

After this season, who out of Inter, Juventus and Milan is in the best
form ahead of next season?
"All three teams are reinforced from this season. Apart from the
Champions (League) final defeat, Milan have had a positive season. Juventus
won the Scudetto and we won the Coppa Italia. We will start off on equal
terms."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MANCINI: "A FEW WELL CHOSEN PLAYERS..." [2]
MILAN - Part two of Roberto Mancini's end of season interview with Inter Channel:

What kind of Inter are you expecting to find in Riscone di Brunico on
14 July when the new season officially begins? You have already said you
would like a smaller squad.
"Yes, at the start of last season we had the problem that there were a
lot of us, more than thirty. And it was difficult because with thirty
players you can't even train all of them on one pitch. So I'm expecting to
have a smaller squad and four or five new players in those roles where we
didn't have enough cover. The idea is to bring a few carefully chosen
players into an already consolidated squad."

Are you referring to the wings?
"Yes, I think so, even if certain situations need to be examined
carefully, by starting with who we already have. There are some good players
who shouldn't be on the bench, who need to play and want to play. I
understand them, and it's right that they go and play where they know they
will play regularly. After many years in a team where you play little, you
lose your desire and need new motivations. I understand certain needs full
well; it's important for a player to play consistently and everything
becomes a lot more difficult when you're not playing much."

Tactically, can we expect to see any changes, or will you continue
with a 4-4-2 formation, even if this can be proposed in different versions?
"For me the four-man line is better, both in defence and offence.
Then, depending on the players and specific situations, it can change. We
have a basis and we will pick up from this. But the various tactical
situations can change. We already have done, and we will continue to
change."

Is Mancini's ideal midfield made up of a holding midfielder, a
playmaker and two wingers?
"Ideally, yes. But looking back over the season I have to say that we
also did well with two holding midfielders - two players who can in any case
play football, even if they don't have the same game construction qualities
as Veron. We did very well with Cristiano Zanetti and Cambiasso in the
middle, and with them in midfield the team stopped drawing and started
winning. There are some situations in which you can use one solution and
others when you can and have to change. But as a basis it's certainly better
to have two good wingers with a holding midfielder and a playmaker."

So is this how you intend to move on the transfer market?
"Yes, although the transfer market isn't as easy as what you read in
the papers. Sometimes you want to do certain things and you don't succeed.
Everyone's goal is to do what will be useful for the team."

In general, what kind of transfer market are you expecting? A lot of
names have been mentioned, but who in the end will really change team?
"As always, the first move will set everyone else off."

Along with Fabio Capello and Carlo Ancelotti, Mancini is one of the
few coaches in Italy to have kept his position...
(Mancini smiles) "But sometimes in Italy they think that you can do
better by changing, but this isn't actually the case."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MANCINI: "TOLDO, CUCHU AND SINISA..." [3]
MILAN - Part three of Roberto Mancini's end of season interview with Inter Channel:.

Mancini, was the first problem you met at Inter that of getting the
team to play the ball around better? By passing it instead of long balls
forward to the strikers?
"In the past Inter sometimes had the ball in defence and the first
solution was to play it forward to the strikers, but this is also a way of
playing. There are some coaches with good strikers who can be decisive, and
they want to serve them as soon as possible. And Inter have always had
extraordinary strikers capable of deciding matches by themselves. But I
think that keeping the ball on the ground and passing it around is very
useful to the team. Sometimes you can use ball possession to face moments
when the team isn't that well physically."

Were you pleased about reading that you have managed to get Inter
playing good football?
"I'm pleased about it because you need to start off from this basis to
get results. But I thought and I still think that you need to win by playing
well, and that you win if you do things well. By working hard, even through
difficult moments, you can win."

There has been no lack of difficult moments or difficult decisions to
make this year. Like changing your first-choice keeper for a while. Why?
"This is also to do with building a team. Sometimes players who think
they have a guaranteed place in the team don't manage to play to the best of
their ability. I knew Toldo very well, having also coached him in Florence.
Maybe by thinking he had a guaranteed first-team place he unwillingly didn't
manage to do more or do the great things he is capable of. Sometimes after a
humiliation - and it's a tremendous humiliation for a player to be dropped -
you do better. After those four or five matches in which he wasn't a
starter, he came back and did very, very well."

One of the positive aspects of this season is Esteban Cambiasso.
Perhaps not even you were expecting him to be so good.
" Cambiasso started off very well in pre-season training. Then he had
a lapse and didn't play in the opening league matches. Then since Brussels,
when he returned, he became a fundamental player. He has given balance to
the team and done very well. He has certainly been a nice surprise. He has
done so well that he has regained a place in the Argentine national team,
and indeed they took him away for their first Confederations Cup match
before the Coppa Italia final return leg."

There was a bet to win: Sinisa Mihajlovic. He has played a lot, he has
scored some important goals, and when he has played he has led the defence
brilliantly.
"When a player with the class, quality and personality of Mihajlovic
arrives it's clear that there may be a few shake-ups in the team. Mihajlovic
isn't a normal player. He was and still is a great champion. He has won
everything in his career; there's nothing he hasn't lifted. I know him well
and I've known him for a long time. I made sure he was brought in when I was
at Sampdoria. I knew what he could give me. I knew he couldn't play sixty
matches, but I still thought he could be useful, and he came on a free
transfer, which was an important aspect for the club. Yes, Sinisa has been
an important player this year as well."

You always believed in it and you said it a thousand times. But when
did you really know that Inter wouldn't win the championship?
"I believed in it up until the (Milan) derby we lost 1-0 (in
February), and I still don't know how we managed to lose that match... It
was a pity. I knew that everything could change if we won the derby. That
defeat took our legs away a bit. But it's all useful. The boys must
understand that even if there are twenty-five matches remaining they must
still believe because nothing is impossible in football. If we had won in
Reggio Calabria and against Chievo in Milan we would have significantly
reduced the gap in the table and maybe things would have finished
differently."

Four matches against Milan and no goals in your favour. Just a
coincidence?
"Apart from the abandoned Champions (League) game, we played three
practically equal matches. And in these three matches we faced an
extraordinary Dida. He made some incredible saves against us, then he was
back to normal. In terms of what was seen on the pitch, the four derbies
should have been draws. It went differently so we're hoping we've kept the
victories and goals for next season..."

MILAN - The day after Inter's Coppa Italia triumph, Massimo Moratti spoke of
the psychological significance of the trophy, the pleasure he had in sharing
the cup victory joy with the Giuseppe Meazza crowd and all Inter fans, and
the summer transfer in an interview with Inter.it after a morning's work at
the Saras offices in Milan's city centre:

Dr Moratti, what were your feelings last night, seven years after winning
the UEFA Cup in Paris?
"It was different, naturally. It was very pleasing to see Mancini's work
rewarded. It was important to give the players greater confidence. It will
help them from today onwards."

Is the Coppa Italia victory another reconfirmation of Mancini?
"It's a prize that was needed. Many times when you say someone is good but
nothing is won, it provokes irritation, or it's not enough. In this case
what he has collected is useful for getting even better results in the
future."

There were over seventy thousand people at the stadium to see Inter lift a
cup. An important sign to continue with this project?
"Yes, without doubt. And the value of the cup itself has its significance.
Because the value is given by the fans. I'm very pleased about this, and
it's also confirmation from the fans that we're on the right track."

Can Inter fans now dream of, or should they think of Inter just making a few
changes to the squad?
"At this point I don't think even the fans want much from the transfer
market. Their dream is to get good results. It would be a mistake to
revolutionise the team and look for stars to compensate for the lack of
security. I can see greater security, good play, and the squad just needs to
be reinforced slightly. This is enough to give the squad greater
tranquillity."

From this point of view Mancini
<http://www.inter.it/en/squadra/allenatore/index.html> has been very clear
by asking you to sign Pizarro and asking for something to be done on the
wings...
"Yes, even if regarding Pizarro I only think he was replying to a
journalist's question. I think some things are necessary, and these are the
things we will aim to do."

Is Solari close to joining Inter?
"Yes, but besides the name of the player, we're thinking of a winger.
Actually, an extra one because last night Kily

> González showed not only his qualities, but also his great character
which is very useful to the team. On the other side we have van

> der Meyde, who is a quality player. If anything, the team just needs a
few reinforcements. We will see whether it will be Solari or someone else."

Are Samuel and Ronaldinho two names we can hope to see at Inter?
"With Ronaldinho I think it's like going back to something that we would no
longer do. As far as Samuel is concerned, he's one of those we are
following, but there's an economic evaluation to make. Let's not forget that
we have to look carefully at the budget."

Juan Sebastian Veron

> has said he wants to continue at Inter.
" Veron

> is a great and serious professional, both on and off the pitch."

What about Chivu?
"They're all good players. But I have to say that the Inter defence did well
last night and has done well in the entire second half of the season. We
must also look at what we already have, which is not that bad after all."

Has yesterday's victory restored enthusiasm? And Totti seemed doubtful about
his future last night. Are you tempted to make a transfer market coup?
"Look, I have enthusiasm for football. But looking at the budget, a bit
less. So we need to look at both these things all the time. I don't think
the fans are dreaming of these things. They'd rather have a serious reply
from the team. And I think it will come. I feel that yesterday's victory is
a start, not just an isolated episode."
